Who We Are

John Taj Neville is the principal, designer and craftsperson behind Neville Fabrication. He was born in 1983 in Dare County, North Carolina.  He has lived most of his life in the state, excluding stints in New York City and Florence, Italy.  Neville was introduced to art and craft at an early age: his mother is a painter and art historian, his father a master furniture maker.

In 2006 John began working in the shop with his father, Bill, while on summer break from college. The collaborative and artistic nature of the work inspired a newfound passion and he began his apprenticeship as a furniture maker. After several years with his father’s business, Caseworks, John took a job at Skram Furniture Company (Burlington, NC), where he built his first chairs. This began his ongoing inquiry into the practice of chair making. At Woodpecker Enterprises (Apex, NC), he was part of a team that fabricated and installed a large-scale millwork project to beautify a historic performance space on Duke University’s campus. This work experience formalized the technical ability, attention to detail, and work ethic now crucial to Neville's studio practice, designing and producing heirloom quality furniture.

In 2014, John struck out on his own, opening Neville Fabrication. Since then, he has been hard at work building fine custom furniture and custom cabinetry and enjoying life in central North Carolina with his partner, Alice, and their little black cat, Iggy.
